LoRa gateway for outdoor use

27 February 2019 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

The LORIX One industrial outdoor IP65 LoRa gateway, made by Wifx Sàrl, features high reliability as well as ease of deployment. Despite being an outdoor device, its quality construction means it is delivered with a two year warranty.

The device itself looks like a simple extension of the 868 MHz antenna; one end screws into a compatible 868 MHz antenna (a variety of which are available from local distributor, Otto Wireless Solutions). At the base of the device is a cavity which is accessed by screwing off an end-cap. Within this cavity is the 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port, which also caters for passive Power-over-Ethernet at 24 V d.c. The cavity also contains an SD-card slot, allowing the user to extend the internal memory of the device, as well as a USB port which caters for device configuration as well as managing / updating the gateway manually.

In terms of specs, the LORIX One features an ARM Cortex-A5 600 MHz processor, with 128 MB of DDR 200 MHz memory, as well as 256 MB of Flash memory. It runs on a Linux Yocto 4.4 operating system and is prebuilt to support SSH server, Python, the LORIOT cloud app, the Things Network cloud app, and includes a Semtech packet forwarder.

The RF side of the device is based on the SX1301 SPI gateway chip, with 8 channels and 49 demodulators operating at 868 MHz. The receiver sensitivity is -140 dBm (LoRa) and -110 dBm (FSK), with a transmission power of 27 dBm.

In order to deploy a full Internet-capable gateway, the LORIX One is compatible with Otto Wireless Solutions’ range of industrial wireless routers from Wlink. By connecting the LORIX One and a Wlink router, an LTE/HSPA-capable gateway is created, allowing the user to communicate with nodes/sensors in the field, and backhaul the data to their server environment.
