Gas discharge tubes

12 September 2001 Circuit & System Protection

Gas discharge tube (GDT) products protect both human and property from lightning and transient voltage disturbances. GDTs have high surge currents and low capacitance ratings. Current ratings can be as high as 500 A for 200 impulses and capacitance ratings can be as low as 1 pF with zero volt bias.

These hermetically-sealed gas tubes arresters consist of an alumina ceramic tube, sealed on both sides by electrodes. The tube is filled with an inert gas and the discharge tubes of alumina ceramic have excellent characteristics such as mechanical strength, high surge absorption and stability. Features include fast response to surge voltage, a large surge resistance, fail-safe with high efficiency. Nonradioactive material is used to ensure safe handling.

GDTs can be used in many applications, including telecom, CATV/broadband applications, RF antennas, consumer electronics, PCB, automotive and more.
