Multiband 3G module

27 April 2011 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

WCDMA/GSM/GPRS/EDGE wireless module which supports up to WCDMA 384 Kbps uplink and a much faster 3,6 Mbps downlink data transfer. It features functionality such as embedded LUA script, TCP/UDP/FTP/HTTP/SMTP/POP3 and MM3 to provide design flexibility.

According to Otto Wireless Solutions marketing manager, Chris Viveiros: “With many countries putting pressure on developers for new M2M devices entering the market to be 3G-compliant, many engineers are faced with having to weigh up the functionalities needed against the cost of the 3G module. After experiencing considerable success with the low-bandwidth SIM5215E 3G module, SIMCom has decided to build on this success by introducing the SIM5216E 3G module at minimal extra cost, but with an abundance of extra performance. It is considered to be the middle sibling of the SIMCom 3G family, bridging the gap between the SIM5215E and the top-end products.”

The combination of low upload speeds and high download speeds make the SIM5216E suitable for applications such as jukeboxes enabled with wireless communications. The upload speed of a jukebox need not be exceptionally high to upload royalty information to a server timeously, but the extra download speed does come in handy when the jukebox needs to download new music files from a server.

In addition, the SIM5216E offers a simple camera interface which allows users to stream video or send photographs through the GSM network to an end server application, at the same time allowing for offline recording with compression and saving of video or photographic content. These features are handled within the module via simple AT commands.
