IC adds USB connectivity to any product

6 April 2006 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

USBwiz is a small integrated circuit that allows users to add USB connectivity (keyboard, mouse, joystick, printer etc) to a system very easily. Ghi Electronics' USBwiz also includes the FAT file system so you can run USB thumb drives and external USB (FAT formatted) hard drives. Also, being TCP/IP aware, it can be used to connect a product to the Internet (or LAN) through wires or wirelessly. No USB knowledge is necessary as the device is plug-and-play. Through simple commands over UART SPI or I²C (similar to ALFAT), files can be read/written from a thumb drive or SD/MMC card. Accessing USB human interface devices (HID) and USB printers is also said to be simple. It can be used with any microcontroller including for example, PIC, AVR, and Basic Stamp. The UART runs as high as 921,6 K-baud, SPI clock is up to 7 MHz and I²C clock up to 400 kHz. Firmware is field upgradeable. It is packaged in LQFP 64 and very few external components are needed. The 3,3 V device with 5 V tolerant I/O pins, draws 40 to 50 mA and can operate over -40 to 85°C temperatures.
