PLL synthesizers for 500 MHz, 1,2 and 3 GHz

The ADF4116, ADF4117, and ADF4118 are new Analog Devices integer-N RF phase-locked-loop (PLL) frequency synthesizers - pin-compatible to the LMX2306, LMX2316, and LMX2326 - that can implement local oscillators in the up-conversion and down-conversion sections of wireless receivers and transmitters.

These devices consist of a low-noise digital phase-frequency detector (PFD), a precision charge pump, a programmable reference divider, programmable A and B counters and a dual modulus prescaler (P/P+1). They implement an N divider, where N = BP + A, and generate a stable frequency of N times the reference frequency when used in conjunction with an external loop filter and voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO).

According to ADI the ADF4116 works with RF inputs of up to 550 MHz and has a dual-modulus prescaler of 8/9. The ADF4117 works with inputs up to 1200 MHz, while the ADF4118 works with inputs up to 3000 MHz. Both have dual modulus prescalers of 32/33. Control of the on-chip registers is via a simple 3-wire interface.

The devices operate from -40 to +85°C on a single 2,7 to 5,5 V supply. They come in 16-lead TSSOP or 20-lead chip scale packages.
