SMSC's second generation 10/100 non-PCI Ethernet controller, the LAN9118, addresses the growing demand to connect multiple PCs with printers and digital media at home. It targets embedded and consumer electronics markets where performance and low power are critical requirements.
A high throughput and low cost networking technology, Ethernet's ease of use makes it an attractive solution for providing high-speed audio and video streaming at home. The LAN9118 is designed for video-streaming applications, such as cable, high definition television (HDTV), digital video recorders, home gateways and printers. With large memory buffers containing fine granularity, fast bus cycle times and built-in flow control support, the LAN9118 can support high data rates with little or no packet loss, says the manufacturer. It is capable of supporting multiple high-definition video streams.
Key features of the LAN9118 includes: power management - wake-on-LAN support allows network to wake-up consumer electronics devices from sleep state; multiple low-power modes; built-in flow control support prevents receive memory from overflowing; uses either 802.3 'pause' packets or 'back-pressure' (half-duplex links); simple SRAM system interface; interfaces to any embedded processor; requires own chip select; driver support for multiple processors and operating systems; processors: SH3/4, Xscale, ST, Peaks and more; operating systems - Linux, WinCE with others to follow.
