At this year's Futurex, Spescom Telecommunications introduced FlightLite 100, an optical wireless solution for enterprise IT professionals that is specifically targeted at the entry-level data market.
LightPointe's FlightLite 100 is an optical wireless solution for flexible LAN (local area network) connectivity for enterprises of all sizes and industries. The company says that it offers fast, easy and secure 'last mile' connectivity and does not suffer from the interference issues of RF products or the time-consuming and expensive trenching of fibre-optic cable.
According to the company, the FlightLite suite of optical wireless links provides true optical networking performance at entry level LAN pricing. Available in a range of bandwidth and distance options, the range can provide Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet links over distances of up to about 1 km.
The director of sales Africa for LightPointe, Rob Dalton, was at Futurex to introduce the new product. He said, "The FlightLite 100 was specially developed by LightPointe for the entry level end of the data market. At this level, the majority of connections are over distances of less than a kilometre, so we removed all of the high-tech extras and came up with a more affordable product that is very reliable with a high efficiency rate.
The FlightLite 100 offers 60 times the bandwidth of a standard T1/E1 line with a payback period of six months, claims LightPointe. For customers who currently lease copper access between buildings from their local telecommunications service provider, the FlightLite 100 offers significantly higher bandwidth and a welcome end to recurring monthly charges. Within six months, customers are typically free of monthly charges, while operating LANs with full-duplex Fast Ethernet speed, says LightPointe.
