Mixed signal RF chipset and demo kit

2 July 2003 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

Texas Instruments offers a portfolio of RF ICs targeted to transmit and receive data using the unlicensed ISM bands specifically designed for short-range half-duplex RF links. The product offering can cover frequencies between 750 to 950 MHz, supporting up to 110 Kbps (NRZ). The product portfolio offers a broad range of cost-effective possibilities for the system designer.

The major highlights of the product line include: up to +9 dBm transmission; down to 230 Hz resolution; up to -99 dBm sensitivity; multiple channels; NRZ and Manchester encoding; brownout detection; programmable via SPI; down to 1,8 V operation; FSK/OOK/FM; low power consumption.

Development kit

Texas Instruments also has available its MSP-TRF6901-DEMO kit that is used to develop bi-directional wireless links. The kit includes two boards that communicate using the US ISM-band frequency. The kit has a JTAG connector that enables the user to prototype new applications. It supports the 860-930 MHz frequency bands (including US and European ISM bands).

Each board features the following: TRF6901 and MSP430F449 components; a JTAG connector that plugs to the MSP430 FET tool to download new software; MSP430 and TRF6901 I/Os, including LCD driver I/Os; a PCB antenna; an RS232C port; two AAA battery sockets; four LEDs and four buttons used for game application; four LEDs used for the receive strength signal indicator; 4-bit DIP switches pre-programmed with US band frequencies; an SMA connector footprint for additional range.
