DVB bandpass filter for standard L

4 June 2003 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

Spinner has designed a bandpass filter with a larger resonator cross-section of 200 x 200 mm2, where the shape of the resonator inner conductors is adapted to the requirements and an improved convection cooling system. Using this filter it is possible to build combiners with a broadband input for analog TV transmitters suitable for 30/3 kW, standard L.

In contrast to standard G, in standard L, the vestigial sideband does extend to the lower channel boundary, and the sound carrier is only 250 kHz away from the upper channel boundary. If a digital and an adjacent analog channel have to be combined, with the digital channel passing the filters, problems may occur. In the neighbourhood of the channel boundaries the filters in use feature a reflection attenuation which must not be neglected because it weakens the analog signal.

The filters transform the resulting power loss into heat, ie, the filters are not only heated up by the transmitted digital signal, but also by the analog signal which is not completely reflected. This heating by the analog signal mainly affects the first three resonators, which may therefore soon suffer from thermal overload. There are two approaches to solving the problem. The resonator quality can be improved so as to achieve higher edge steepness, or the arising heat can be discharged as effectively as possible. Both measures cause the filter dimensions to grow.
