RF power amplifiers

2 April 2014 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

Hittite has launched two new GaAs MMIC power amplifiers (PA) that are ideal for test instrumentation, high capacity point-to-point/point-to-multi-point radios, SATCOM, radar and telecom infrastructure applications covering the DC to 40 GHz and 9 to 12 GHz frequency ranges.

The HMC5805LS6 is a distributed PA which operates between DC and 40 GHz, providing 13 dB of gain, 33 dBm output IP3 and +22 dBm of output power at 1 dB gain compression, while requiring 175 mA from a +10 V supply. It exhibits a slightly positive gain slope from 8 to 32 GHz, making it ideal for EW, ECM, radar and test equipment applications. Its I/Os are internally matched to 50 Ω.

The HMC6741LS7 is a four-stage PA with a temperature compensated on-chip power detector which operates between 9 and 12 GHz. The amplifier provides 35 dB of gain, +38 dBm of saturated output power and 25% PAE from a +7 V supply. With up to +44,5 dBm output IP3, it is ideal for high-linearity military and space applications and point-to-point/point-to-multi-point radios. Its I/Os are internally matched.

Both amplifiers require no external matching components and are housed in ceramic air cavity packages which exhibit low thermal resistance and are compatible with surface mount manufacturing techniques.
