3 W stereo audio amplifiers

12 March 2003 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

Maxim's MAX9760-MAX9763 family of integrated audio amplifiers optimised for portable applications such as notebook computers and DVD players, combine a stereo or mono 3 W bridge-tied load (BTL) audio amplifier, stereo headphone amp, headphone sensing, and a 2:1 input multiplexer all in a 28-pin thin QFN package (5 x 5 x 0,8 mm).

These devices operate from a 4,5 to 5,5 V single supply and feature an industry-leading 100 dB PSRR, allowing operation from noisy supplies without adding a linear regulator. Ultra-low 0,002% THD+N ensures clean, low-distortion amplification of the audio signal.

Click-and-pop suppression eliminates audible transients on power and shutdown cycles.

Power-saving features include a low 10 mV offset voltage to minimise DC-current drain through the speakers, a low 13 mA supply current, and a 10 µA shutdown mode. It includes a MUTE function and a headphone-sense input.

To compensate for limitations in the frequency response of the loudspeakers, the integrated 2:1 input multiplexer makes it easy to select from multiple audio sources or an external equaliser network. The various functions are controlled by either an I2C-compatible or simple parallel-control interface.

The MAX9760-MAX9763 are available in 28-pin QFN and TSSOP-EP (exposed pad) packages.
