Dallas Semiconductor's DS80C400 is a networked microcontroller chip that integrates a high-speed 8051 core, a 10/100 Mb Ethernet MAC, and silicon software TCP IPv4/v6 stack. The DS80C400 can be connected directly to IP networks and is a highly affordable solution for embedded networking needs according to the manufacturer. Operating at up to 75 MHz, the device provides ample speed to perform local control while also servicing network requests. In addition to the Ethernet MAC, the DS80C400 includes three synchronous/asynchronous serial ports that operate up to 18,75 Mbps, a CAN2.0B controller, up to eight ports (64 I/O pins), and a 1-Wire master.

Applications that require network connectivity such as MP3 audio players, web cameras, environmental controls, and industrial equipment can use the DS80C400's network interface for data collection, remote monitoring and control as well as remote application updates. The resident silicon software on the chip supports Internet standards such as TCP, UDP, IPv4/v6, IGMP, ICMP, TFTP, and DHCP. Applications can be executed from local memory or downloaded from the Internet for quick application updates.

A free download of the tiny Internet interface (TINI) runtime environment is available at www.maxim-ic.com/TINI. The DSTINIm400-144 verification module is also available for developers who want a proven implementation of the reference design for rapid evaluation and system integration. To streamline access to the network, application code can be written in Java or C.
