Parsec: Technology partner for infinite possibilities

EMP 2017 Electronics Manufacturing & Production Handbook Manufacturing / Production Technology, Hardware & Services

Since its creation more than 20 years ago, Parsec has grown to become one of South Africa’s leading original design manufacturers (ODMs), specialising in the design, development, manufacture, integration and support of advanced technology systems and products for the industrial, mining and defence environments.

New divisions followed by consolidation

Parsec was formed in 1993 by four independent software engineers as a consulting company, managed by Stephan Isebeck. Shortly afterward, they teamed up with Petrus Pelser and Rynier van der Watt who had formed a hardware design consultancy called FPGATEC, and rebranded the two divisions as Parsec Engineering and Parsec Design Consultants respectively. Hot on the heels of that came the establishment of Parsec Components, which was managed by Petrus van Heerden and secured the sole distributorship of Altera components in South Africa. During 1998, Ian Mackey and his company Surenet joined the group as Parsec CAD. In the same year Charl Roux and his Advanced Design & Manufacturing company joined as Parsec Manufacturing.

In 2002, Parsec Engineering, Parsec Design Consultants, Parsec CAD and Parsec Manufacturing merged to form Parsec (Pty) Ltd. In 2015 the company was incorporated into the Ansys group, with Ansys’ mining and defence divisions being consolidated into Parsec in the process, thereby further enhancing its extensive capabilities and offerings in those sectors.

A tale of exponential growth

From its humble beginnings in Silverton, serving the needs of businesses that required small to medium production runs as well as larger defence OEMs that needed high-quality prototypes, Parsec is now housed in custom-designed facilities at Route21 Corporate Park in Irene. It has integrated its production offerings with its electronic design and development capability, thus enabling it to offer a unique blend of one-stop electronic design and production services. A critical factor allowing it to meet these diverse needs is the company’s deep understanding of design and production issues, and its ability to integrate the two.

Parsec has grown into a substantial player in the local and international market, with a proven track record of working with customers in the United States, Canada, Europe and the Middle East.

The company provides electronics manufacturing services to a wide range of customers, with a facility geared for volume and prototype turnkey manufacturing. Its services include procurement, low- to high-technology SMD assembly, X-ray process control, automated optical inspection, testing, conformal coating, environmental stress screening, system integration and configuration management.

It has invested in state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment that allows it to offer the latest hot air convection reflow, stencil printing, BGA rework and wave soldering technology. With employees certified per the latest relevant IPC Class 213 standards, it can provide services in various market sectors ranging from high-end defence and aerospace systems, various industrial projects through to cost-sensitive, high-volume mining products.

Parsec’s competencies have enabled it to forge strong technology partnerships with companies in the high-tech and volume sectors. Working closely with clients ensures its facility can cater for intelligent production needs, i.e., production based on strong engineering capabilities.

Parsec provides development services to product development companies as well as system integrators. Design disciplines include software, firmware, hardware and CAD design, supported by a system engineering process and directed by a project management office. Parsec's technical capabilities include image processing, digital signal processing, high-speed data conversation, video, FPGA, analog and mixed signal applications as well as design of mechanical enclosures and packaging.

The company is a leading player in the programmable logic environment and has formed partnerships with numerous entities that require high-tech programmable logic designs. It has gained extensive design and production experience while developing its own range of leading-edge, configurable CompactPCI and PMC modules.

Defence solutions

By joining forces with Ansys, Parsec offers turnkey professional engineering solutions to the defence and aerospace community spanning from the early system concept stages through to final product manufacturing and logistic support. Its proven, ISO certified project management, system engineering, design and development, and manufacturing processes guarantee professional and consistent end results.

Each solution is tailor-made to clients’ requirements and, where possible, leverages a range of in-house commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) embedded products. Parsec’s defence and aerospace offering provides expert solutions for signal processing units for electronic warfare; weapons integration and weapon control systems; MIL-STD communication interfaces; mission computers and display electronic units; and test equipment.

Information security

Parsec’s HSNE (high security network encryption) is just one of the company’s state-of-the-art solutions on offer. It is ideal for government and private entities, all of which increasingly rely on secure communication over public networks such as the Internet.

Branch offices are able to connect to their headquarters and each other by means of Parsec’s HSNE9200 gateway. This allows them to use the public network to create a virtual private network (VPN). The HSNE9200, configured as a registration authority, then provides dynamic and secure registration for gateways wanting to join the VPN. Configured as the registration authority, the HSNE9200 issues crypto officers with USB tokens with which to enrol and authenticate HSNE9200 gateways in the VPN.
