Control IC and MOS transistor in single package

21 November 2001 Electronics Technology

Infineon hit the spot again when it developed the world's first integrated power factor correction (PFC) solution - the CoolSET PFC - ICE1PD265G. This device meets market demands for lower costs and reduced footprint, at the same time raising the bar for flexibility and reliability.

The CoolSET integrates a power factor control IC and a 650 V CoolMOS power FET in a small SO-16 package. CoolMOS technology in the output power switch enables the first member of the new CoolSET PFC family - the ICE1 PD265 - to handle up to 40 W of output power without a heatsink. It also features a discontinuous current mode PFC control IC with a modulated gate drive to reduce EMI. Other highlights include integrated protection functions and low standby power loss.

Key features include:

* CoolMOS technology for 650 V.

* Control IC and CoolMOS in one package.

* No heatsink/minimal heatsink.

* Discontinuous current mode PFC.

* Overvoltage protection, undervoltage lockout.

* Open loop and brown-out protection.

* Low standby current.

* Modulated gate drive for low EMI.
