USB power delivery protection solution

20 April 2016 Circuit & System Protection

Bourns announced the release of the USB power delivery protection PortNote solution and design kit.

The USB power delivery specification enables data and up to 100 W of power simultaneously on one USB cable. This new PortNote solution illustrates how a polymer PTC (Bourns model MF-LSMF300/ 24X) can protect the DC bus during short circuit testing as recommended by USB 3.1 section 11.4.1.1.1.

The high-speed data lines for negotiating power as well as the USB bus itself require over-voltage protectors with low capacitance which are provided by Bourns 5 V and 3,3 V, 4-channel TVS diode arrays (models CDDFN10-0524P and CDDFN10-3324P). The DC link bus requires a step-down or step-up converter with a high-current, soft-saturation power inductor, such as Bourns’ SRP6540-100M which measures 7,2 x 6,5 x 4,0 mm.
