Actum Electronics is supplying Cortronic’s range of boxes for ESD-safe packaging of components in black conductive polystyrene and in shielded corrugated cartons, with or without dissipative or conductive foam.
To a greater or lesser extent all contact between objects, every separation of one item from another, each sliding of one thing on another, causes a disturbance of electrical charge. When charge disturbances take place faster than charge redistribution, static charge accumulates. ESD occurs where charges of different electrostatic potentials meet. The flow of electrons is usually sudden and releases energy that can damage electrostatic sensitive devices (ESDS).
All containers and working appliances in an ESD protected area must be of a diverting nature in order to make a controlled potential equalisation relative to the grounding possible.
Cortronic packaging is designed for the protection of ESDS and because of its static dissipative skin and buried conductive core, it is an ESD shielding material suitable for use in ESD protected areas. The range of products includes component boxes, PCB transit boxes, IC tube boxes, in-plant handlers for PCBs and custom applications.
Also available from Actum is conductive pin-insertion foam from Vermason. The black, electrically conductive fine-cell foam is highly inert and supplied in a thickness of 6 mm. It is a firm substance which is non-particulating and therefore especially suitable for pin insertion. The foam can be vacuum formed and is easily cut or routed.
The cross-linked, closed-cell polyethylene foam has excellent chemical and physical stability and is good for long-term storage. It offers desirable pin-insertion and pin-retention characteristics, and exhibits RS of 103 to 105 Ω and RV below 103 Ω/m.
