Type 1 lightning arrester

28 September 2011 Circuit & System Protection

The Powertrab PWT lightning arrester from Phoenix Contact protects three-phase industrial power supplies up to 554/960 V a.c. against damage caused by surge voltages.

With a rated voltage of 800 V a.c. and its high-performance parameters, this Type 1 arrester is especially suitable for industrial applications, such as wind turbines or power distribution systems.

The three-pole module is compliant with lightning protection class 1 with a nominal discharge surge current (10/350 μs) of 100 kA. What makes it notable is the combination of the low protection level of 4,5 kV with the high TOV rating up to 1500 V a.c. for 5 s and 1960 V a.c. for 200 ms. The device has no secondary current or leakage current.

Multistage function monitoring provides the required data as remote indication signal for maintenance purposes. In addition, the red-green LED provides a status display directly at the device. The arrester has a short-circuit current rating of 50 kA and can be protected up to 400 A. It is shock and vibration tested up to 25 G, and operates reliably at altitudes of up to 4000 metres. The large power reserves guarantee a long service life.
