KVG Quartz Crystal Technology has developed new high-frequency OCXOs (oven-controlled crystal oscillators) specified for the frequency range of 100 MHz to 500 MHz.
These new products possess enhanced low phase noise performance with low G sensitivity (LGS) due to new phase-noise-optimised SC-crystals utilised in the low-noise multiplier circuits.
For a 100 MHz output signal, the phase noise at 100 Hz from the carrier is less than -130 dBc/Hz (optional -135 dBc/Hz); it is below -155 dBc/Hz at 1 kHz (optional -160 dBc/Hz); and -170 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz. The noise floor at a distance of 100 kHz and larger is better than –175 dBc/Hz. For a 500 MHz output signal, the phase noise typically is less than -120 dBc/Hz at 100 Hz carrier offset; better than -145 dBc/Hz at 1 kHz; and below -155 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz; the noise floor at 100 kHz and higher is at –160 dBc/Hz, typically.
In addition to their phase noise performance, the new OCXOs also have excellent frequency stability of ±50 ppb over the temperature range from -20°C to +70°C. Versions for an extended temperature range from –40°C to +85°C are also available. The long-term stability (ageing) of the products is better than ±3 ppm in 15 years. Special attention was paid to HiRel applications requiring low G sensitivity. KVG is utilising specially designed, low-G crystals to optimise the vibration sensitivity for mobile applications such as train, aircraft or trucking. This makes it possible to achieve a dynamic G sensitivity of less than 1 ppb/g.
A rugged metal housing (51 x 51 x 29 mm) has been designed for the specific needs of HiRel applications. It has an SMA connector for signal extraction using a coaxial RF cable and feed-through capacitors for the operating voltage, the tuning voltage and the reference voltage connections.
These OCXOs are suitable as a reference for microwave signal sources, for the radar in professional satellite communications technology, for applications in the field of measurement and medical equipment (MRI), and for military applications with high demands on short-term as well as long-term stability and phase noise.
