Varistors are voltage-dependent ceramic resistors (VDRs) that reliably protect electronic systems against overvoltages by limiting surge voltages or currents and by absorbing the energy.
The Epcos SIOV metal oxide varistors have proved themselves as general-purpose elements for ensuring immunity (to EN 50082) from:
* Electrostatic discharge (ESD) to IEC 1000-4-2.
* Bursts (fast transients) to IEC 1000-4-2.
* Surge voltages (high-energy transients) to IEC 1000-4-5.
They satisfy requirements for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), as demanded for CE conformity in Europe, says Epcos. The manufacturer supplies SIOVs in leaded style (some models with integrated overload protection), as SMDs (encapsulated monoliths and multilayer technology), plus block, strap and power modules for heavy-duty applications. Suitable models are also available for medium voltage arresters in power distribution networks.
Some major additions and improvements are:
* Large selection of surface-mount varistors in multilayer technology with boosted surge current ratings (up to 1200 A).
* Special SMDs with controlled capacitance to substitute blocking capacitors (50 pF to 30 nF).
* Multilayer varistors in size 0603 (4 to 14 V).
* Disk varistors with integrated thermo fuse (TFVs).
* Arrester blocks, rated at 3 and 6 kV, for medium-voltage arresters.
