Smartcard interface IC

24 June 2009 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

Maxim recently introduced the DS8023, a low-power, low-cost, single smartcard interface IC. A complete interface for smartcard communication, this device performs level translation between a host microcontroller and a 5 V, 3 V, or 1,8 V smartcard.

The DS8023 offers a low-power stop mode which reduces current draw to a mere 10 nA while the card is inactive. This low-power stop mode can significantly extend battery life in portable applications such as wireless POS terminals. Additionally, the IC provides ±8 kV ESD protection to prevent damage to the application during card insertion and removal, it supplies up to 80 mA for smartcard operation and it operates from a single supply. Because it meets ISO 7816 and EMV Level 1 specifications, the device is suitable for financial terminals, consumer set-top boxes and smartcard reader products.

The DS8023 is available in a lead-free, 28-pin SO package or 28-pin TSSOP package, and is fully specified over the -40°C to +85°C extended industrial temperature range.
