Handheld FTTx OTDR

15 April 2009 Test & Measurement

The new NOYES OFL 280 from AFL Telecommunications is a handheld, FTTx (fibre to the ‘x’) optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) with live fibre test capabilityand an integrated PON power meter.

Ideal for testing single-mode fibres in broadband passive optical networks (BPON), gigabit passive optical networks (GPON) and Ethernet passive optical networks (EPON), the OTDR comes in two models: the FTTx ‘Construction’ model, that operates at 1310, 1490, and 1550 nm; and the FTTx ‘Installation and Repair’ model, with the ability to test dark fibres at 1310, 1550, and 1650 nm, or live FTTx fibres at 1625 nm, and measure PON power levels at 1490 and 1550 nm, all from the same port. Both models can operate in full auto, realtime or expert (manual) modes.

With standard features that include an optical power meter, optical laser source, visual fault locator, 12-hour Li-Ion battery, and internal memory to save over 1000 OTDR traces, the OFL 280 combines versatility and functionality into a unit with a 3,5 inch indoor/outdoor LCD display. OTDR and OPM test ports are equipped with tool-free adapters which can be changed quickly.

Results are saved as industry standard .sor files, which can be transferred to a PC for viewing, printing and analysing with supplied Windows compatible software.
