Class D audio subsystem provides high power output

28 November 2007 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

Maxim's new MAX9796 2,3 W, Class D audio subsystem combines a high-efficiency, mono Class D amplifier, a DirectDrive stereo headphone amplifier and a DirectDrive mono receiver amplifier. By using Maxim's patented, DirectDrive architecture, the receiver and headphone amplifiers produce a ground-referenced output from a single supply, thus eliminating the need for large, DC-blocking capacitors. To further save cost and space, the MAX9796 utilises Maxim's advanced, active-emissions-limiting (AEL) circuitry and spread-spectrum-modulation technique, which greatly reduce EMI and eliminate the output filters typically required by Class D amplifiers. Providing high output power and enabling small total solutions, the MAX9796 is suitable for cellphones, portable media players, handheld gaming consoles and other applications in which high audio quality, output power, and efficiency are paramount.

The MAX9796 delivers 2,3 W of output power into a 4 Ω load from a 5 V supply, and offers efficiencies up to 79%. Additionally, it features a fully differential architecture, a full-bridged output, and comprehensive click-and-pop suppression. Multiple audio inputs increase flexibility and reduce total solution size. To further enhance flexibility, the MAX9796 utilises a user-defined, I²C-controlled mixer architecture that includes an input mixer, volume control and output mixer.
