Press-fit power tap connectors have increased current-carrying capacity

17 May 2006 Interconnection

Erni has equipped some of its popular series of Power Tap connectors with a new press-fit zone (the EN, or 'eye-of-the-needle' zone). By changing to the new press-fit zone, one achieves a more evenly distributed force progression during press in. This, in turn, lowers the strain on the board's press-fit through hole. Erni also offers versions with solder pins.

The new Power Tap model type features a deep-drawn, formed thread. These connectors feature a resilient press-fit zone and come in 6-pin and 10-pin versions. Power can be supplied via screw-mount connectors, or via slip-on pluggable connectors with cable lugs or flat terminal sockets (eg, 'faston').

All variants are available with different connection threads (M3, M4, 6-32 UNC and 8-32 UNC). By employing a new material, the developers succeeded in increasing the maximum current-carrying capacity for the 6-pin version (6 press-fit pins) from 30 to 40 A (at 20°C) to match the rating for the 10-pin version. The 10-pin version is also available with 'faston' termination.
