12 W Class D stereo amplifier IC said to be low cost solution

22 March 2006 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

The MAX9741 is a high-power highly efficient Class D stereo amplifier from Maxim. The device offers audiophile audio quality while delivering continuous output power of 12 W per channel into 8 Ω loads. This audio amplifier is optimised for flat-panel display and portable-audio applications including LCD and PDP televisions.

The MAX9741 separates itself from other Class D amplifiers by requiring very few external components, leading to the industry's lowest BOM and total solution cost, according to Maxim. The Class D efficiency eliminates the need for a heatsink, while the company's proprietary spread-spectrum modulation (SSM) technology reduces the external filtering required to pass FCC EMI limits. The MAX9741 also does not require expensive Schottky diodes or large, unreliable electrolytic capacitors.

The MAX9741 offers differential inputs, internal circuitry for comprehensive click-and-pop suppression, and four selectable gain settings. Packaged in a 56-pin TQFN, the MAX9741 also includes short-circuit and thermal-overload protection, and operates over -40 to 85°C.
