Pre-alignment guiding solutions for daughtercards

8 March 2006 Interconnection

Erni has developed a portfolio of pre-alignment modules to enable the reliable connection to the backplane of complex plug-in cards with high pin-count hard-metric (HM) connectors.

The guiding solutions cater to the need for precision connector mating combined with sufficient play between sub-rack guide rails and PCB cards. The pre-alignment modules can also be used for reliable coding and grounding issues.

Plug-in cards that comply with the CompactPCI standard (IEC 61076-4-101) are equipped with HM connectors. A 2 mm HM connector may have hundreds of contacts. The plug-in board connectors and related backplane connectors must mate precisely in order to avoid damage. However, there must be play between the cards and rails to avoid compression stress on the PCB. Erni's pre-alignment modules consist of solid metal guides to ensure a secure and reliable connection.

The pre-alignment pin with fastening thread is fastened on the backplane and is available for PCB thicknesses of 2,5 to 6 mm, and 6 to 8 mm. The related guide bush is mounted on the daughtercard using an M4 or M5 screw. PCB thickness for the daughter-card can be 1,6 to 3,5 mm, or 3,5 to 5,5 mm.
