Charleswater has been a leader in providing innovative solutions for the control of electrostatic discharge (ESD) for many years. Charleswater offers metal-in, metal-out and EMI-shielding moisture vapour barrier bags. An alternative to the metal lined bags, it also offers a clear poly bag that is static-dissipative and recyclable.
The bags are made on machines designed to 'soft fold' the bag material to prevent scratches and creases within the metal film of the bag to maintain an uninterrupted Faraday Cage. The bags are polycarbonate compatible and contain no Amines, Amides or N-Octanoic Acid.
Charleswater's bags are tested to meet and exceed the electrical and physical requirements of MIL-B-81705C Type III, EIA-541, EIA-625, MIL-HDBK-263A, MIL-STD-1686 and EOS/ESD standards.
Metal-in shielding bags:
Buried metal shielding bags offer superior durability at a low cost. Enhanced durability is obtained with the metallised layer buried between the polyester and polyethylene layers. The metal layer prevents the penetration of damaging electrostatic fields. Tribocharging is minimised by the specially processed polyethylene. Light transmission of better than 50% allows for easy identification without removal.
The dissipative polyester layer provides strength and prevents stretching which can reduce the effectiveness of shielding bags. The aluminium shielding layer is a highly conductive metallised layer which provides a watertight Faraday shield. The inner dissipative polyethylene layer prevents static electricity from being generated inside the bag. This type of packaging is recommended for packaging of static sensitive components and assemblies.
Metal-out shielding bags:
Metal-out shielding bags are designed to protect against static induced damage. The metal out layer is close to the surface for low resistance readings. The bags will dissipate a 5000 V static charge to zero in less than 100 ms. Light transmission of better than 40% allows for easy identification, so that PC boards can be seen without removal. Metal-out bags have a unique abrasion resistance outer layer to prevent scratching the metallic layer.
EMI shielding moisture vapor barrier:
This bag combines the properties of Moisture-Vapour-Barrier with EMI-FRI-ESD shielding. It is manufactured from Web E350 material film which is qualified to MIL-B-81705-C. The MVTR (moisture vapour transmission rate) also meets the requirements of MIL-B 131 and EIA-583. The configuration is basically the same as the metal-in or buried metal bags with a metal layer placed between the two layers of film.
MVB bags have a puncture resistance of greater than 138 kPa, making it ideal for packaging tubes or trays that have sharp edges, eliminating expensive end plugs and foam caps. For dry packaging, added extra heavy metal layer provides the EMI attenuation and water-vapour barrier properties. The metallised film process supplies a barrier that is softer and more flexible than the foil counterpart and is easily heat sealed.
Clear recyclable dissipative bags:
This bag features clear ultra high moisture barrier structure with excellent puncture resistance. The product is suited for packaging of both moisture and chemically-sensitive materials. Multilayer construction features a heat sealable inner layer. This bag is stronger than the standard unsupported polyethylene construction, is light in weight and contains no topical antistatic agent. Unlike the topical treatments, Charleswater's dissipative bags are largely unaffected by moisture. The bag is made of 100% polypropylene construction and is recyclable.
