New ceramic capacitors have reduced short-circuit risk

Epcos developed a new type of ceramic capacitor to minimise the risk of short circuits if the capacitor is damaged. The product is suitable for applications in which the capacitor is permanently connected to a positive pole without extra safety measures. Flexural rupture of conventional capacitors may lead to contact between opposite polarity electrodes with the resulting dangers of local overheating or a fire. The affected module then fails and the battery is discharged at the same time.

Connected in series, the MLSC (multilayer serial ceramic capacitor) significantly reduces such risks, says Epcos. Also, no extra safety measures are required, so that existing designs and layouts can be retained. The internal structure of the new component is based on two series-connected capacitors. Even if one of these should fail due to a short circuit, no short circuit occurs in the overall component.

The new series B37941X capacitors are available in size 0805 and ceramic material X7R. 100 V types cover the capacitance range from 1 to 100 nF, while 50  V types cover 33 to 100 nF.
