Epcos has extended its CeraDiode CDS4 series with a 3 pF type that has the same solder pad dimensions (2,5 x 0,8 mm) as a TVS diode in a SOD 323 package. The new type CDS4C16GTH can therefore be used as a drop-in replacement for diode solutions, says the company, so customers can avoid expensive and time-consuming redesign of circuit boards.
Thanks to the low 3 pF capacitance, signal distortion is largely avoided. Contemporary semiconductor solutions, on the other hand, which cannot drop below the 5 pF threshold, cannot satisfy demands for higher transmission rates. The high-speed Cera-Diode is therefore used for ESD protection of data and video lines with high data rates, such as USB 2.0, Ethernet and Firewire.
Epcos also offers a standard type (CDS4C12GTA) rated at 68 pF with the same footprint. This variant is used for general ESD protection and as an EMC filter, eg, for audio lines. Both types have a response time of less than 0,5 ns. Further advantages include low leakage currents and no degradation at temperatures up to +85°C.
