Epcos has optimised its discharge resistor modules based on hybrid ceramics to simplify mounting of discharge resistors on PFC capacitors and enhance reliability.
The new module is no longer supplied in a separate bag, but pre-mounted on the capacitor at the factory. Mounting of the module between the terminals of the capacitor provides IP20 shock hazard protection to VDE0106, Part 100, ie, inadvertent physical contact or short circuits between phase and ground are prevented. Cable connections can also be made more easily.
Discharge resistors are needed to discharge PFC capacitors to protect personnel against electric shocks. They are also needed to switch capacitor stages in automatic PFC systems in order to prevent out-of-phase connections in parallel. The modules discharge capacitors to 75 V or less within 60 seconds. Before reconnection, they must be discharged to 10% of their rated voltage or less.
