As a result of progressive miniaturisation of components, Epcos has been offering a multilayer varistor as a quad array with nickel barrier termination (three-layer silver/nickel/tin metallisation) in size 0508. It was specially developed for protection of high-speed data and video lines against electrostatic discharge. Its low capacitance of 10 pF prevents signal attenuation and distortion. Typical applications will be found throughout mobile communications, data systems and multimedia.
The new component is designed to operate on 16 V d.c. Maximum leakage current is 0,01 μA at 4,2 V and 25°C. Maximum energy absorption is specified to IEC 61000-4-2 at 30 mJ. The operating temperature range permitted extends from -55 to +85°C (without derating). The short response time of less than 0,5 ns is notable.
