Headphone amp eliminates DC-blocking caps

30 July 2003 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

The MAX4411B headphone amplifier IC combines Maxim's patented stereo DirectDrive technology with a fixed-gain configuration. This eliminates both the bulky DC-blocking capacitors and the external-gain setting resistors. The result is a low-cost, ultra-compact headphone amp requiring very few external components. DirectDrive generates a ground-referenced output from a single 1,8 V to 3,6 V supply, which unlike conventional solutions, does not require a mid-rail DC bias voltage to be applied to the headphone jack ground pin - doubling output dynamic range. The MAX4411B has a fixed gain of -2 V/V, produces 80 mW per channel into a 16 Ω load, and has very low 0,003% THD + N. A high 86 dB PSRR at 217 Hz allows direct operation from noisy supplies. Independent left/right, low-power shutdown controls optimise power savings in mixed mode mono/stereo applications. MAX4411B comes in 16-bump chip- scale-package (2 x 2 x 0,6 mm) and a 20-pin QFN.
