Gas discharge tube lightning arrestor

20 May 2015 Circuit & System Protection

Antenna port transient voltage protection for smaller radio equipment is possible with a new range of compact, multi-stage surge protectors from Nextek.

The coaxial lightning arrestors of the PTC series are designed to operate at frequencies between DC and 6 GHz with N-type connectors.

Utilising a gas discharge tube to shunt high voltages to the grounded outer conductor/shield, the devices have multiple strike capability and a surge capability of up to 20 kA for 20 μµs. They can withstand up to 10 multiple strikes of 5 kA each and their bidirectional operation protects antenna systems and equipment.

With its compact design and rugged, water-proof construction, the PTC series is used by a number of military manufacturers to protect sensitive communications and air navigation systems. It exhibits typical VSWR of 1,3, insertion loss of 0,25 dB, RF power capability of up to 0 W and a through current of 10 A.
