Intel reported second-quarter revenue of $12,8 billion, net income of $2,0 billion and earnings per share (EPS) of $0,39. These results were down on last year’s second quarter when revenue was $13,5 billion, net income was $2,8 billion and EPS was $0,54.

Fairchild Semiconductor announced results for the second quarter ended 30 June 2013, with sales of $356,5 million, up 4% from the prior quarter and 1% lower than the second quarter of 2012. The company reported a second quarter net loss of $7,5 million or $0,06 per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $0,5 million or $0,00 per diluted share in the prior quarter and net income of $11,9 million or $0,09 per diluted share in the second quarter of 2012.

Cypress Semiconductor’s revenue for the second quarter of 2013 was $193,5 million, up significantly from the $172,7 million in the previous quarter but down from the $201,3 million of last year’s second quarter. Net income for the second quarter of 2013 was $3,77 million ($0,02 per share) compared to last year’s second quarter figure of $4,98 million ($0,02 per share).

Xilinx announced first quarter fiscal 2014 sales of $579 million, up 9% from the prior quarter and down 1% from the same quarter of the prior fiscal year. First quarter fiscal 2014 net income was $157 million or $0,56 per diluted share, 20% up on the previous quarter’s net income and 21% higher than the first quarter of last year.

Skyworks Solutions reported third fiscal quarter 2013 results for the period ending 28 June 2013. Revenue for the quarter was $436,1 million, up 12% when compared to $389,0 million in the third fiscal quarter of 2012. GAAP net income for the third fiscal quarter of 2013 was $65,7 million and diluted EPS was $0,34. This compares to net income of $49,3 million and diluted EPS of $0,26 in the second quarter of 2012.

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group has appointed LG Electronics to its board of directors and has reappointed Apple and Nordic Semiconductor as Associate Member Directors. In addition to these companies, the board comprises CSR, Ericsson, Intel, Lenovo, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia and Toshiba.

Wireless technologies like Bluetooth and embedded cellular are accelerating in the car business, with market revenue set to rise by 41% from 2012 through 2018, according to a report from IHS. Global original equipment manufacturer (OEM) market revenue for wireless technology in cars is set to rise to $1,6 billion in 2018, up from $1,1 billion in 2012, as presented in the figure below. Ongoing challenges in this market include signal reception, electromagnetic interference, increasing system complexity because of varying wireless frequency spectrums, and regional differences and specifications.

Technology

Although graphene is a highly promising material for the future of electronics, concerns have been raised by a team of researchers from Brown University who concluded that it can be harmful to human cells. If the discovery is confirmed, it could see the commercial application of graphene being delayed while techniques are investigated to reduce the material’s toxicity.
