Maxim has launched a corporate venture group to invest in startup companies and innovative technologies. Through the new initiative, the company intends to make strategic investments to seed technologies aligning with the company’s focus areas and products, and facilitate partnering for Maxim’s business units with smaller companies.

Agilent Technologies reported revenues of $1,72 billion for its third fiscal quarter, which is 2% above one year ago. Third-quarter GAAP net income was $243 million, or $0,69 per share. Last year’s third-quarter GAAP net income was $330 million, or $0,92 per share.

Skyworks Solutions exceeded its previous revenue guidance of $383,0 million for the third fiscal quarter of 2012 by achieving $389,0 million, up 7% sequentially and 9% when compared to revenue of $356,1 million in the third fiscal quarter of 2011.

Net revenue for Semtech’s second quarter of fiscal year 2013 was $150,7 million, up 15,7% from the second quarter of fiscal year 2012 and up 29,2% from the first quarter of fiscal year 2013. GAAP net income for the second quarter of 2013 was $10,0 million, or approximately 15 cents per diluted share. This compares to GAAP net income of $27,1 million or 40 cents per diluted share in the second quarter of 2012 and GAAP net income of $2,2 million or 3 cents per diluted share in the first quarter of fiscal year 2013.

For its 2012 fiscal third quarter, Avago Technologies reported net revenue of $606 million, an increase of 5% compared with the previous quarter and 0,5% more than in the same quarter last year. Third quarter net income was $145 million, or $0,58 per diluted share. This compares with $134 million, or $0,54 per diluted share for the prior quarter, and $144 million, or $0,57 per diluted share, in the same quarter last year.

Mentor Graphics announced financial results for its fiscal second quarter of 2012. The company reported revenue of $240,8 million and GAAP earnings per share of $0,16. This compares with second quarter 2011 revenue of $213,7 million and GAAP earnings per share of $0,04.

Companies

RF Micro Devices has been chosen to power Samsung’s next-generation GALAXY Note II with its PowerSmart Power Platforms of converged multimode, multiband (MMMB) power amplifiers.

Industry

The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) announced that worldwide sales of semiconductors reached $24,40 billion for the month of July 2012, a slight increase of 0,2% from the previous month’s $24,34 billion. Sales from July 2012 were 1,9% lower than the July 2011 total of $24,86 billion, but the year-over-year decrease was smaller than it has been since October 2011. The graph shows the fluctuations in semiconductor sales and growth rate since January 1996.

Findings from a recent Semicast study show revenues for semiconductors in the industrial sector (including medical) are forecast to grow from $32,4 billion in 2011 to $55,2 billion in 2017, a compound annual growth rate of 9,3%. Compared to a total semiconductor market of around $300 billion, the industrial sector is estimated to have accounted for almost 11% of the overall semiconductor total available market in 2011, a larger proportion than the automotive sector.

Despite reducing its 2012 planned capital spending by $1,0 billion, Intel and four other large semiconductor suppliers are still expected to account for almost two-thirds of industry-wide capital expenditures in 2012, according to new data released by IC Insights. The top 5 capex spenders for 2012 – Samsung, $13,1 billion; Intel, $11,2 billion; TSMC, $8,3 billion, SK Hynix, $3,7 billion; and GlobalFoundries, $3,1 billion – are forecast to account for 64% of the $61,4 billion in semiconductor capital expenditures forecast for 2012.

Technology

A research group at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) has demonstrated a model for how semiconductors can be epitaxially grown on graphene and other graphitic substrates. The finding could be key to fabricating flexible electronics such as nanowire solar cells and light emitting diodes.
