Sealtron has been appointed as the local agent for Taiyo Yuden, a manufacturer of a wide range of surface mount and leaded passive components, and Fuzetec Technology, which makes circuit protection devices.

Powertech has entered into a joint venture with EnerSys, a global leader in stored energy solutions for industrial applications, by selling 50,1% of its industrial battery business incorporating Battery Technologies, Rentech and Willard Industrial Division to Enersys.

Lantronix reported financial results for its fiscal 2011 fourth quarter and full year ended 30 June 2011. For the quarter, net revenue was $12,0 million and GAAP net loss was $3,6 million, or $0,34 per share. For the year, net revenue was $49,3 million and GAAP net loss was $5,3 million, or $0,51 per share.

RF Micro Devices has raised its revenue potential by forming a new division for non-RF products. The new Compound Semiconductor Group (CSG) will operate alongside the company’s Cellular Products Group (CPG) and Multi-Market Products Group (MPG). RFMD forecasts the total available market (TAM) for non-RF applications addressed by CSG will exceed $1,5 billion in calendar 2015.

Micron Technology announced results of operations for its fourth quarter and 2011 fiscal year, which ended 1 September. For the fourth quarter, the company had a net loss attributable to Micron shareholders of $135 million, or $0,14 per diluted share, on net sales of $2,1 billion. For the 2011 fiscal year, the company had net income attributable to Micron shareholders of $167 million, or $0,17 per diluted share, on net sales of $8,8 billion.

u-blox has acquired all assets and intellectual property of Australia-based SigNav, a 15-year veteran in precision timing and reference frequency technologies required by consumer femtocell and mobile base station applications. Femtocell base station shipments were approximately 2 million units in 2010, and are expected to grow to 12 million units by 2014.

Atmel has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Advanced Digital Design, a privately held company based in Spain that develops power line communication solutions. Financial details were not revealed and Atmel does not expect the acquisition to have a material impact on its overall financial position and results of operations in 2011.

Vishay announced the acquisition of the resistor businesses of Huntington Electric comprised of Huntington, Milwaukee, Central and Mills Resistors. The purchase price for these businesses was approximately $19,6 million subject to customary post-closing adjustments.

According to the EDA Consortium, the Electronic Design Automation (EDA) industry’s revenue increased 17,6% in the second quarter of this year to $1,44 billion, compared to $1,22 billion in the same period last year. Sequential EDA revenue for Q2 2011 decreased 0,6% compared to Q1 2011, while the four-quarter moving average, which compares the most recent four quarters to the prior four quarters, increased by 16,3%. Companies that were tracked employed 26 721 professionals in Q2 2011, an increase of 1% compared to the 26 457 people employed in Q1 2011, and up 2,9% compared to Q2 2010.

Market research by Semicast suggests that the rapid growth of the ARM architecture is set to continue over the medium term, with annual shipments of ARM-based processors set to match the world’s population (approximately 7 billion) this year, and reach twice the world’s projected population in 2015. The analysis forecasts units of ARM-based processors growing from 0,4 billion in 2000 to 17 billion in 2016, with ARM-based processor shipments estimated to total an astonishing 95 billion units over this period.

Inventories held by semiconductor suppliers in the second quarter of 2011 swelled to levels not seen since the start of the last downturn in early 2008, raising concerns over the near-term outlook for the chip market, according to a new IHS iSuppli report. Global supplier semiconductor stockpiles at the end of the second quarter stood at an unusually elevated 83,4 days of inventory (DOI) — a level exceeding even the last record high of 83,1 DOI seen in the first quarter of 2008.

Samsung Electronics and Micron Technology have incepted the HMC Consortium to promote the establishment of an open interface specification for a new memory technology called the hybrid memory cube (HMC). HMC technology aims to improve upon DRAM capabilities by adding logic processes to memory packages and thereby improve power efficiency, bandwidth, density and scalability.

The Semiconductor Industry Association announced that worldwide sales of semiconductors were $25,03 billion for the month of August, a slight increase of 0,7% from the prior month. On a year-to-date basis, sales grew 2,2%.
