Farnell has been awarded the ‘Leaders in innovation’ award from Alpha Wire, a leading manufacturer of cables, wires and heat shrink products. The award recognised Farnell’s sales performance throughout the year, achieved as a direct result of its strategy of combining commerce and community via its element14 website portal.
Crocus Technology announced the acquisition of NXP Semiconductors’ MRAM (magnetic RAM) patent portfolio. These patents provide fundamental MRAM intellectual property rights in multiple geographic areas worldwide.
Kontron announced that it has adopted the ARM architecture for, initially, products in the module and board form factors. Under development at Kontron is a new module format optimised for usage with ARM system-on-chip processor types. The modules will enable ARM processors (single, dual and quad core) to be used in most vertical market applications. Following the initial release, Kontron then plans to expand its SBC family, as well as tablet and box PCs and HMIs. All Kontron ARM-based products will be available as standard solutions or as customer-specific designs as required.

New In-Stat research is forecasting Bluetooth-enabled device shipments to exceed 2 billion in 2013. Bluetooth has been bolstered in the past year by the emergence of two new standards. Bluetooth 3.0 + High Speed (HS) combines classic Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to transmit large data files and Bluetooth 4.0, which offers much lower power consumption than classic Bluetooth and targets medical and fitness devices, as well as PCs and mobile phones. However, classic Bluetooth is still expected to remain the leading BT interface throughout the forecast period.
In a recently published report, Databeans forecasts that the LED market will grow at a 36% compound annual growth rate for lighting applications, and expected to reach $4,5 billion by 2016. This number is outpacing the LED market as a whole – a market currently being led by Taiwan on a national basis. Recent technology and environmental policies have been pushing companies to record high revenue numbers in this emerging market. The bulk of this demand includes retrofitting existing incandescent and fluorescent infrastructure with new LED bulbs.

Rice University engineering researchers have made a breakthrough that could allow wireless phone companies to double throughput on their networks without adding a single cell tower. The new ‘full-duplex’ technology allows wireless devices like cellphones and electronic tablets to both ‘talk’ and ‘listen’ to wireless cell towers on the same frequency – something that requires two frequencies today. The challenge of developing new wireless standards for full-duplex remains, but the researchers expect that we may start seeing this when carriers upgrade to 4,5G or 5G networks in just a few years.
