Tellumat showcases weapon-locating radar

29 October 2008 News

Tellumat Defence recently exhibited the battle-tested ARTillery HUnting Radar (ARTHUR) at the Africa Aerospace and Defence Expo, in partnership with SAAB of Sweden.

A high-tech, in-vehicle radar that locates and initiates response to enemy artillery, ARTHUR was developed for the British, Swedish, Norwegian and Danish armies by SAAB; Tellumat has been appointed SAAB’s South African radar partner of choice.

The ARTHUR, known as MAMBA by the British, is presently in use in Iraq and Afghanistan, in war operations and for the protection of camps. It has been lauded as a ‘decisive battle asset’ and ‘one of the most valuable battlefield ground sensors’ for its significant achievements in hostile environments, pin-point assessment of impact and launch locations, and best-in-class area coverage. It is said to have saved the lives of numerous soldiers faced with enemy mortar, rocket and cannon fire.

Colin Meintjes, Tellumat Defence managing executive for the group’s Northern South African region, says ARTHUR can also be used in peace-time operations, including large events like FIFA World Cup football matches.

“It detects artillery-launched missiles in a fraction of a second, determines the place of impact and launch position, and communicates the data to command and control, who advises evasive action and initiates interception of the missile or a retaliatory strike.” He says ARTHUR’s 'unforgiving characteristics' have made it a very efficient deterrent.
