High-density planar power for mission-critical systems

27 November 2025 Power Electronics / Power Management

In the demanding world of aerospace and defence electronics, efficiency, space-savings, and reliability are non-negotiable. Vishay’s SGTPL-28 family of planar transformers rises to that challenge, offering 150 W of output power from a 28 V input forward-converter architecture.

What sets the SGTPL-28 apart is its combination of compact planar construction and multiple output secondaries. Designed to support up to two 12 V rails or up to four 5 V rails with a centre tap, the flexibility fits modern power-system topologies where multiple voltage domains must be supported from a single magnetic unit. The input voltage range runs from 18 V to 36 V, which accommodates many typical aerospace power bus levels and offers robustness to bus voltage variation.

Because the SGTPL-28 series uses a planar magnetic architecture, it achieves higher power density compared to traditional wound transformers. This means lighter weight and smaller size – both fundamental for avionics, satellite, or defence systems.
