Company profile: Osiris Technical Systems

23 June 2021 News

The year was 1985, an exciting time for the field of computing – a year after the founding of Dell, Cisco and Lenovo, and the release of Apple’s famous ‘1984’ commercial. Meanwhile in Pretoria, Stef du Plessis, a scientist specialising in organic chemistry, had developed a deep interest in and passion for, computing technology. As the first personal computers started making their way into people’s homes, he realised the potential for this kind of technology to also drive breakthroughs in the field of science and industry, and Osiris Technical Systems was born.

The company specialises in auto identification and data acquisition in industrial and specialised environments. This includes RFID, barcoding, rugged, industrial, and data acquisition hardware and solutions for asset tracking, access control, process monitoring, automation and other applications – regardless of how extreme the environment or how stringent the demands on the equipment.

You know you’re doing something right when most of your new business comes through referrals from existing clients and partners, and this is certainly the case for Osiris Technical Systems. The company’s focus has always been on building trust, keeping promises, and going the extra mile to deliver. It offers its clients niche products and customised solutions, so other important marketing and sales channels are industry publications such as Dataweek, trade and industry events, and ensuring it has a host of useful information available through its website.

In it for the long haul

With over 35 years of history, the company has had several evolutions in size, organisational structure, physical presence, business model, and even its name. Initially it was called Isis Technical Systems, after the Egyptian moon goddess. When another tech company also had the same moniker, Stef and his team came to an agreement to change the company’s name to Osiris Technical Systems, another name derived from Egyptian mythology. Given what Isis has recently come to represent, that was quite a fortuitous decision!

What has remained constant is a genuine commitment to client relationships and a passion for technology with unique and rare capabilities. Today, Osiris Technical Systems has a lean team of just under 10 permanent staff, with more than 25 hardware and development partner companies. With this structure, it can assemble exactly the right combination of experts for the needs of its customers.

The past is the past though, so looking to the future, the rapid advancement of IoT technologies, and the possibilities and innovative applications of RFID, are very promising. Osiris Technical Systems is uniquely positioned to take advantage of this trend through its deep expertise in RFID, extensive partner network,

and experience of developing unique solutions for unusual and often extreme environments.

Regardless of what year it is, the solutions that Osiris designs and implements for its clients always include a support and repair service component. This is part of the company’s commitment to delivering solutions that not only solve the precise challenges that its clients have, but that are also cost-effective and enduring.
