Non-contact voltage detector for field service engineers

12 March 2003 Test & Measurement

The Toptronic type T475 voltage detector is a small pocket-size instrument which can provide an essential service for the engineer in the field. When presented to the outside of a cable, or even close to a cable, it will give immediate indication as to whether or not the cable is alive.

According to the distributor, HellermannTyton, the T475 can detect voltages and currents even through armoured cable and indicate the presence of a voltage and emit an audible signal. This latter feature is useful for electrical engineers operating in plant areas and underground. The instrument can be worn on the belt and will emit an audible signal if a live voltage is relatively near the operator. Very sensitive, it will indicate when a voltage or current is present by a flashing LED and audible signal, when it is within the range 5 to 250 V. For HV environments, the instrument will simply indicate that the voltage is higher than 250 V.

HellermannTyton also markets the T40 HV probe suitable for up to 40 kV d.c. or peak AC.
