Microchip's latest digital thermal sensors shown at electronica feature an SPI interface and offer high-accuracy temperature measuring and monitoring while occupying very small footprint. With the ability to communicate with a variety of microcontrollers and other digital ICs via 3- and 4-wire industry standard interfaces, the high-resolution TC77 and TC72 thermal sensors read temperatures without additional external components. The TC72, available in 8-pin 3 x 3 mm DFN and MSOP packages, and the TC77, in 8-pin SOIC and tiny 5-pin SOT-23 packages, offer significant board space savings. The DFN package has a lower profile and significantly better thermal resistance than standard package types and simplifies manufacturing through the elimination of conventional side leads.
These devices are capable of measuring temperature with a maximum error of 1°C over a certain temperature range. The TC72 reads temperatures from -55 to +125°C and has an operating voltage range of 2,65 to 5,5 V. Temperature resolution is 0,25°C per bit and temperature accuracy is 2°C maximum over the entire -40 to +85°C temperature range. The TC77 offers the highest resolution of 0,0625°C per bit, an extended temperature range of -55 to +125°C and an operating voltage range of 2,7 to 5,5 V. Both sensors consume low operating current (250 µA typical) and have an ultra-low power shutdown mode (1 µA typical) making them ideal for battery-powered applications.
