Atmel has introduced the first member of the ultra low power AVR flash microcontroller family. The Mega169 is designed specifically to address low power requirements. According to the company this device is an 8-bit Flash memory-based RISC microcontroller capable of 16-bit performance surpassing that of competing 16-bit microcontrollers.
Atmel says that new possibilities are opened for products that need to be operational in the field without having access to line power. Products will be able to run up to 10 times longer on the equivalent battery power when compared to traditional microcontroller solutions.
