Analog Devices' AD5263 digital potentiometer is claimed to be the industry's first +15 V, quad channel, 256-position potentiometer with a selectable digital interface. A single +15 V supply can be used with 0-15 V signals, or a dual ±5 V supply can be used with ±5 V signals. Controlled from a pin-selectable 3-wire SPI or a 2-wire I2C compatible data interface, the AD5263 performs the same electronic adjustment function as a mechanical trimmer, variable resistor or potentiometer, but provides higher reliability and smaller size.
Each of the four channels in the AD5263 contain a fixed resistor (20 K, 50 K or 200 KOhm) with a wiper contact that taps the fixed resistor at a point determined by the digital code loaded into its register. The AD5263 places the wiper in the midscale position at power ON. A hardware override shutdown feature shorts the wiper to the A-terminal, and open circuits the B-terminal - without disturbing the wiper register contents. In the I2C interface mode, reset and shutdown can be individually set for each wiper, and the current wiper position can be read back by the microcontroller.
With a low temperature coefficient of 50 ppm/°C, this digital potentiometer is used for a wide variety of demanding applications such as: optical network laser diode adjustment, gain and offset adjustment in instrumentation, multichannel audio level control, line impedance matching and programmable voltage to current conversion.
