Solution for PCI implementations at below ASSP cost

1 March 2000 Programmable Logic

Xilinx is offering what it claims is a low-cost PCI solution for the Spartan-II FPGA family, enabling designers to cut the cost of compliant and embedded PCI implementations by more than half compared to PCI application specific standard products (ASSPs).

The solution includes 5 and 3,3 V compliant 32 and 64 bit PCI interfaces for up to 66 MHz designs, PCI consulting services, plus four customisable asynchronous FIFO reference designs that seamlessly integrate with the PCI interfaces. As a result, says Xilinx, designers of high-volume fully-compliant PCI applications such as PC add-in boards, networking products, modems and CompactPCI boards benefit from the flexibility and cost reduction of an FPGA.

The new PCI cores can be implemented in a wide range of Spartan-II devices. The PCI pinout in selected packages is compatible between various device sizes to allow customers to select the most cost-effective solution for a specific application and migrate from one device to another without having to re-layout the boards.

The Spartan-II family delivers 100 000 system gates for under US$10 at speeds of 200 MHz and beyond. These are low-powered 2,5 V devices that feature I/Os that operate at up to 3,3 V with full 5 V tolerance. Spartan-II devices also feature multiple delay lock loops (DLLs), on-chip RAM (block and distributed) and the versatility of select I/O technology supporting over 16 high-performance interface standards. The PCI cores for Spartan-II devices are available now and can be configured and downloaded over the Internet from Xilinx IP Center at www.xilinx.com/ipcenter.
