IXYS recently introduced its high efficiency solar cell technology under the IXOLAR brand name. The market for photovoltaics (PV), devices that directly convert sun light to electricity, has been experiencing spectacular growth recently, averaging more than 30% annually, according to the company.
IXYS has been participating in the solar energy inverters and converters markets with its portfolio of advanced power semiconductors that process the PV-generated raw electricity and convert it to usable, clean electrical power.
IXYS' first family of products, are available as individual cells (XOD-15), and as arrays on a 5" wafer (WOW-15). The devices are based on IXYS' single crystal silicon processing technology and its advanced 'enhanced light absorption' passivation process. These devices are ideal also for solar concentrator applications where efficiencies of 20% and above are achieved.
The single-crystal PV cells represent the higher value-added part of the solar cell application markets, due to their higher efficiency, reliability and the possibility to integrate with other power conversion functions on the same chip.
