LEM manufactures and markets a wide range of current and voltage transducers - devices which can, when coupled to an electrical circuit, measure, and then transmit to another location, current and voltage characteristics associated with a particular electrical operation.
These transducers measure current and voltage by utilising the Hall effect, enabling them to be connected to a circuit without the need to break into that circuit, ie a cable passing through a transducer provides the necessary electrical field to make an accurate measurement.
The company's new 'PCM' transducers from the PointSenz series (part of the LASER family) are intended for trackside applications. They can be coupled to the electrical circuit which operates the points on the railway network, and each time those points are switched, the relevant operating times, currents and voltages are measured by the transducer and recorded. This information is transmitted to a central location, along with similar information from any number of other such assemblies, for computer analysis. Any variation from the standard can indicate the likelihood of incipient problems - wear, rust, debris, vandalism - and allow for preventative maintenance to be undertaken.
