Miniature hub combines cost and convenience

24 April 2002 Computer/Embedded Technology

In the ever-expanding world of Industrial Ethernet products, Contemporary Controls has introduced the EIM4-10T 10 Mbps mini repeating hub in its CTRLink family to meet industrial application requirements in a more cost-effective and uncomplicated manner. Model EIM4-10T is classified as a compact, four-port Industrial Ethernet hub, capable of increasing network distances beyond the 100 m limit of the 10Base-T specification. Applications are: Ethernet I/O, machine monitoring, test and measurement, process control, remote data acquisition, communications gateway.

It functions much like the standard size EI4-10T and EI8-10T except that one port can be used as an uplink port to connect two hubs together; thereby, eliminating a crossover cable. It supports the signalling requirements of 10Base-T while conforming to the standards for IEEE 802.3 repeater units. LED indicators aid troubleshooting. Besides one common collision LED, one activity/link LED exists for each port. Solid green indicates link presence and flashing green indicates traffic. There is one power LED.

Other features include wide-range, low-voltage DC (10 to 36 V) or AC (8 to 24 V) power at 47-63 Hz, provisions for redundant power connections and DIN-rail mounting. The EIM4-10T complies with the EMC compatibility standards for immunity and emissions in an industrial environment.

Benefits: compact size; 10Base-T-compliant; shielded RJ-45 connectors; IEEE 802.3 repeater unit compliant; built-in uplink provision; link integrity indication; DIN-rail mountable; low-voltage AC or DC operation; provision for redundant power sources; LEDs for activity/link, collision, and power; industrial environment EMC compatible.
