Fibre-optic sensing system developed to test ropes

27 March 2002 Test & Measurement

A specialist UK company has developed a fibre-optic remote sensing system that can test the flex and deterioration in mooring, towing and lifting ropes which anchor offshore installations such as drilling and production platforms.

Tension Technology International (TTI), in conjunction with Strathclyde University, developed and produced a transducer that can detect variations in the extension of a rope along its length. Tests have been undertaken in a laboratory environment with a 25 m trial rope and the development forms the basis of an international patent application. The consortium's work has attracted significant interest from the international oil and gas industry, says the company.

TTI consultant Dr Jeff Nichols said: "The results achieved so far are very exciting and the prospects of delivering a technically competent system to the market are excellent."

Currently, platform operators use redundant moorings or establish property changes through phased removal and testing of leg sections. Both these methods are expensive and unsatisfactory. TTI believes that the commercialised technology will have a major beneficial impact on the safety of floating units through the reduction of risk of mooring line failure and the attendant pollution hazards.
