Connectors bring 38% board space-saving

13 March 2002 Interconnection

An enhanced range of 2,0 mm pitch Minitek connectors from FCI takes 38% less board space than 2,54 mm alternatives. The much extended miniature connector series now meets board-to-board, cable-to-board and wire-to-board requirements and has been included in FCI's 'Basics +' website program.

Shrouded headers with up to 2 x 25 positions have been added and feature a four-wall construction that avoids receptacle mismating. Top entry surface-mount receptacles with up to 50 positions have also been introduced and provide a choice of low (2,3 mm) and standard (4,5 mm) profiles.

To ensure a cleaner solder process, Minitek headers and the SMT low-profile receptacles have become selectively plated, with either 0,76 µm gold or gold flash on contacts and 2,6 µm tin/lead on tails. For greater economy, the PCB receptacles now feature phosphor bronze contacts.

A completely modular connector system, Minitek can be configured in a wide variety of ways, using straight or right-angle, shrouded or unshrouded headers mating with PCB-mounted, crimp-to-wire or IDC ribbon cable receptacles. Headers and receptacles range in size from 2x2 to 2x25 positions.
