Ultraviolet LEDs offer high power at low current consumption

13 March 2002 Opto-Electronics

BivarOpto has introduced the industry's first high-powered ultraviolet LEDs featuring typical intensities from 500 mcds (700 mcds maximum), with a typical stable wavelength of 400 nm. The Ultraviolet LED Series is suited for a wide range of specialty applications including currency validation in vending and change machines, automotive instrumentation, etc.

Solid-state ultraviolet (UV) emission provides increased energy efficiency and related cost economies, as well as longer life over traditional, bulky, non-solid state UV lighting. These UV LEDs offer a desirable alternative for many types of portable or battery-operated test and detection devices. For example, in the medical field, UV LEDs can not only be used for sterilisation, but also as light sources for lower spectrum analysers. For security/law enforcement, the solid-state UV light can be used over traditional methods to detect counterfeit bills and provide accurate fingerprint identification.

This LED Series features a 30° viewing angle and stable 400 nm wavelength that ranges from 390-410 nm. Other performance characteristics include an operating temperature range of -25 to +85°C and a resistance to shock and vibrations not afforded by traditional filament lamps.
